Faculty of Life Sciences – future-oriented

The Faculty of Life Sciences is an interdisciplinary space for education and research, where technology, natural sciences, and societal challenges are brought together. Our goal is to improve human health, develop solutions for civil protection, safeguard the environment and climate, and strengthen the resilience of society – with innovative, sustainable, and practice-oriented approaches.

Around 1,650 students are currently enrolled in five bachelor’s and four master’s degree programs. The faculty is structured into three specialized focus areas:

  • Biotechnology and Medical Engineering
Development of innovative methods and technologies to promote health by combining biotechnology, pharmacy, and medical engineering.
  • Environmental Engineering and Renewable Energies
Research and development of sustainable technologies for protecting the environment and health, as well as harnessing renewable energy sources.
  • Civil Protection and Urban Resilience
Designing strategies and technical solutions to protect society from risks and crises – with a particular focus on urban areas.

We stand for the close integration of scientific foundations with technical applications. Our focus lies on developing sustainable production processes, protecting the environment, contributing to the energy transition, and strengthening societal resilience.

A distinctive feature of our faculty is its strong international orientation: we currently offer four English-taught master’s programs – with more international study opportunities under development.

The faculty also contributes to research and innovation through active involvement in the Competence Center for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (CC4E), the Research and Transfer Center for Applied Life Science Technologies and Environmental Research (FTZ ALSTER), and the Research and Transfer Center for Medicine, Health, and Technology (FTZ MGT).

At our Bergedorf campus, we are making an active contribution to shaping a healthy, sustainable, and livable future.
