Climate Change and Land-use in the Republic of Moldova

[Translate to English:] Field trip nach Busila (Nord-West Moldau)

On June 23, 2022, the Republic of Moldova was granted the status of candidate country for accession to the European Union. A country with an eventful history on the path of transformation from a Soviet republic to a democracy, it is listed in the statistics as the poorest country in Europe.

As a country focused on agriculture, the Republic of Moldova has been suffering in particular from progressive climate change for several years. This manifests itself above all in dry and mild winters and warm to hot temperatures in spring, summer and fall. In the bilaterally funded CCLU-Moldova project, the focus is on developing a common basis for research cooperation. While awareness of the problem is already advanced in many places and among the country's population, there is a lack of an overview of best practice examples and experience in implementing sustainable and long-lasting adaptations that counter climate change, strengthen farmers, enable stable water management and at the same time protect against extreme weather.

As part of the project, the German and Moldovan project teams will each make two visits to the partner. Among other things, a case study will be selected, on which a handbook with concrete recommendations for action can be developed by the end of the project. The fact that the European Union requires standards and structures in agricultural management that must be met by candidate countries also plays a role here. The target groups for the handbook are addressed in individual chapters as political decision-makers, non-governmental organizations, education and research, active land users and the general population.
