Faculty exchange with US partner Virginia Tech

Prof. Dr. Benedikt Plaumann from the Faculty of Aviation & Automotive Systems visited our strategic US partner, Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, from 22 to 26 September 2025. As part of the HAW Hamburg ISAP project 2018-2026, the week was a mixture of networking meetings with Virginia Tech lecturers, laboratory visits, promotional events for the exchange programme with HAW Hamburg, and a meeting with the two students from Hamburg who are currently completing an exchange semester in Blacksburg.

Professor Plaumann was appointed as Professor for ‘Design and Operation of Electric Drives’ at HAW Hamburg in 2020. He has also headed the ‘Technical Acoustics’ Research and Transfer Centre and the university's Acoustics Lab since 2023. He explains his interest in Virginia Tech as follows: ‘The exchange with the Department of Aerospace & Ocean Engineering provides a special insight into their renowned commitment to teaching and the research infrastructure there. I find their work in the field of acoustics with their different acoustic wind tunnels particularly interesting.’

During his week in Blacksburg, he gained an insight into research and teaching at Virginia Tech and got to know colleagues from different fields. In addition to the diverse, highly practical labs, he was impressed by the sophisticated design of the courses and the wide range of practical support provided in the labs. A particular highlight were the large number of high-quality 3D printers available to students for the practical use of additive manufacturing in student projects.

During a graduate seminar lecture, there were also in-depth discussions with doctoral students who showed great interest in the research at HAW Hamburg and within the framework of the ‘Hamburg Aviation’ cluster. These discussions ranged from ideas for short exchange visits between research groups with similar topics to longer-term collaborations in research projects such as the acoustic wind tunnel.

The exchange with the Department of Aerospace & Ocean Engineering provides a special insight into their renowned commitment to teaching and the research infrastructure there. I find their work in the field of acoustics with their different acoustic wind tunnels particularly interesting.

The main focus of the cooperation is still on undergraduate exchange, which has been very active since 2010. The ‘Junior Spring Semester Abroad’ enables Virginia Tech students to spend a semester abroad in Hamburg with full recognition of their courses in Blacksburg, which makes the programme very attractive. Ten students are currently preparing for the 2026 summer semester. Professor Plaumann took part in the Study Abroad Fair and promoted HAW Hamburg to the next generation.

During his visit, Professor Plaumann also met Kevin Plöger and Marina Couronné, the two HAW Hamburg students who are currently completing an exchange semester at Virginia Tech. They have settled in very well and are enjoying the US university campus atmosphere. Kevin Plöger had been planning to study in the USA for some time and describes his experience so far as follows: ‘Studying at Virginia Tech is a great experience. In my favourite course, “Air Vehicle Design”, I am part of a German American team, and we are developing a commercial supersonic aircraft. I can apply a lot of what I have learned during my studies in Hamburg. It's also fun to live in the middle of the huge campus, and as an avid hiker, the location in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains is a real highlight.’

Professor Plaumann received wonderful support from Prof. Dr. Ella Atkins, Department Head of Aerospace & Ocean Engineering, and Prof. Dr. Gary Seidel, Assistant Department Head for Academic Affairs during his visit and was made to feel very much at home. Both professors have visited HAW Hamburg as part of the ISAP project and are very interested in further strengthening the cooperation. Ella Atkins says: 'The Department of Aeronautical & Ocean Engineering at Virginia Tech was delighted to welcome Professor Plaumann. We greatly appreciated his commitment to our students and the in-depth, personal discussions we had with him. We look forward to continuing and further expanding our cooperation with HAW Hamburg in the future.'
