Aeronautical Engineering
Aerospace Engineering – Technology that takes off
Are you fascinated by aeroplanes – and do you want to know how they are designed and built? On the Aerospace Engineering degree programme at HAW Hamburg, you’ll receive a thorough and practical education in one of the world’s leading aviation hubs. You’ll learn how modern aircraft are created – from the initial design to the finished system – and work closely with the aviation industry. This ensures you’re always at the cutting edge of technical developments and optimally prepared for your career start.
The Aircraft Engineering programme focuses on lightweight construction, systems, aerodynamics and flight physics, as well as cabin systems.
Your future career
................................................................................................................................................................................................
As an aeronautical engineer, you will work in development, design, manufacturing or testing – for aircraft manufacturers, suppliers or in maintenance. Your future career will also involve tasks in system integration or the design of cabin systems. Your expertise is in demand internationally – and Hamburg is one of the industry’s key hubs.
Course content and structure
................................................................................................................................................................................................
The first three semesters focus on the subject’s theoretical basis, encompassing mathematics, engineering mechanics, electrical engineering, computer science, CAD & design, and materials science.
From the fourth semester onwards, you’ll delve into aeronautical engineering – for example, in modules such as aviation economics, aerodynamics, aircraft structures, aircraft systems, aircraft engines, flight mechanics and aircraft design.
In the fifth and sixth semesters, you can also choose your own specialisation from our catalogue of compulsory electives:
- Lightweight Construction – focusing on lightweight structures, fibre-reinforced composites and high-performance materials
- Systems – covering topics such as system modelling, artificial intelligence and unmanned aerial systems
- Aerodynamics and flight physics – covering flight mechanics, flight testing and computational fluid dynamics
- Cabin systems – covering topics such as cabin electronics, cabin systems and cabin design
The seventh semester consists of a 22-week industrial experience phase. Here students receive the opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills and capabilities acquired in their degree course through hands-on work on real-life engineering problems. They also gain insights into the world of work in its technical, scientific, organisational and economic facets and contexts. This practical phase – and the degree course – concludes with the completion of a Bachelor thesis.
Semester abroad
Fancy a degree programme with an international twist? Whether in the USA, France, Spain or at one of our many other partner universities – international experience can be easily integrated into your aircraft engineering studies. This not only takes your specialist knowledge to the next level and introduces you to new perspectives and cultures, but also improves your language skills and helps you build contacts that will advance your personal and professional development. |International
Your interests and skills
................................................................................................................................................................................................
If you have a passion for technology and for aviation and enjoy working creatively, HAW Hamburg’s degree course in Aeronautical Engineering will suit you down to the ground. A good grasp of maths, physics and English, as well as strong spatial awareness, will help you in your studies. Creativity, attention to detail and a constructive mindset are also important if you want to work on aircraft systems that are safe, efficient and innovative.
