The HAW Hamburg Health Sciences Department organises the EARTHS (Education and research-oriented training in the health sciences) summer school in cooperation with the HAW Hamburg Sustainability and Climate Change Management Research and Transfer Centre (FTZ-NK) and the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropicial Medicine.
The EARTHS summer school is a four-week training programme co-funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The third summer school with 26 participants from 14 countries across Africa, as well as Palestine and Myanmar, was conducted in 2019 and was a great success. The summer school is intended for Master's and PhD students from developing countries (Africa, Asia and Latin America) who have been awarded a DAAD In-Country / In-Region scholarship and hold a primary qualification in a life sciences or health sciences related field.
The summer school aims to prepare university students and junior researchers for the tasks of teaching and research in their respective institutions. It focuses on strengthening participants' qualitative and quantitative research skills, specifically research statistics and epidemiology, as well as their ability to develop research projects and apply interactive teaching skills. It also introduces participants to current and historic aspects of German culture and aims to facilitate the building of bridges between German researchers and the participants, as well as amongst the participants.
