X-SmartWind

Research into alternative approaches to renewable energy generation and integration

The X-Energy sub-project X-SmartWind deals with the site planning of wind turbines, in particular with the grid and system integration of wind farms.

In the past, system integration only had to be taken into account to a minor extent when constructing wind farms, as the attractiveness of a site depended primarily on the wind yield. In future, however, grid and system integration will play a central role in specific site planning.

New factors arising from the potential benefits for the overall system must be given greater consideration. In addition to the grid congestion problem and curtailment through EinsMan measures, X-SmartWind will also look at the wind farm in conjunction with battery storage and conversion technologies such as electrolysis and power-to-heat, and analyze the provision of balancing energy. Tools for project planning, site analysis and evaluation of wind farms are then developed, which take into account the sensible use of technical solutions for improved grid integration of wind farms (e.g. grid congestion avoidance) at the respective site.
