This European Master’s programme in Medical Technology and Healthcare Business is aimed primarily at those with a first degree in medical technology, biomedical engineering, emergency response/rescue engineering or hazard control, or in a related discipline. Applicants should be motivated to acquire skills relevant to competent work with cutting-edge biomedical devices in a range of application contexts and to carrying out innovative R&D.

Three countries, three institutions, one degree:
Hamburg, Germany: HAW Hamburg, Faculty of Life Sciences
Lille, France: Université de Lille II, Faculté Ingénierie et Management de la Santé (ILIS)
Porto, Portugal; Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde do Porto (IPP)
The course’s first semester, focusing on technological learning, takes place in Hamburg. The core curriculum consists of modules in data acquisition and processing, advanced biosignal processing, modelling medical systems, simulation and VR in medicine, health technology assessment/regulatory affairs, and an engineering project seminar.
You’ll move to Porto for the second semester, during which you’ll explore the clinical application of technical know-how. The core curriculum encompasses a health project seminar and modules in medical imaging technologies and devices, medical measurement techniques, applied clinical imaging, applied clinical signals, and human-technology interaction in the clinical environment.
Semester 3 covers the business side and takes place in Lille. The core curriculum comprises modules as follows: Healthcare business project seminar, principles of marketing in the healthcare business, international healthcare marketing and business, marketing for innovative medical technology, legal and regulatory considerations in the healthcare industry and industrial purchasing, and outsourcing in the healthcare industry.
You’ll complete your degree in your fourth semester by writing your Master thesis, whose aim is to enable you to demonstrate your research and development expertise, preferably in an interdisciplinary setting. You have free choice of institution and supervisor for your thesis.

The admission requirements are as follows:
- First degree as Bachelor (in related disciplines) qualifying for a professional career or a comparable course of studies or a Diploma from a university with at least 180 CP .
- German for international applicants. Certificate of attendance in German of at least 200 hours.
- Proof of English language skills proven by Abitur – or Fachhochschulzeugnis (s. Auswahlordnung) or accepted certificates: TOEFL test (at least 87 points internet-based), IELTS (minimum Band 5.5) or CAE, CPE, FCE (minimum C) or certificates about good performance in foreign countries.
- Applicants holding a first academic degree (Bachelor, Diploma etc.) from non-EU-countries are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); further information at www.gre.org.

Course regulations
General information about your Master's thesis
................................................................................................................................................................................................
You can apply to begin work on your thesis if you have met all the necessary requirements as stipulated in the applicable examination and study regulations (for more information, please see: GESR-ESLC-BM, section 16).
You will need to submit the 'Application to complete a Master's thesis' and the 'Declaration of consent for publication of a Master's thesis' to the first reviewer, the second reviewer and, subsequently, the chair of the Examination Committee (PAV) for their signatures. The PAV will check the thesis title and the suitability of the reviewers and assign binding start and submission dates.
You will be given six months to complete your Master's thesis. If you have other examinations during the semester in which you are writing your thesis, you are required to complete them as well. Depending on your examination load, it is possible to have the time frame to work on your thesis extended. The start date can be backdated a maximum of four weeks in consultation with the PAV.
Please submit your completed and signed application form together with the accompanying declaration. If you have listed an external reviewer who has not previously worked as a reviewer for HAW Hamburg, please also submit a simple copy of their academic degree to the Office for the Coordination of Inter-University Studies. Applications without proof of external reviewers' academic degrees cannot be accepted.
Once your application has been processed, you will receive a copy with your start and submission dates by email.

Financing a semester abroad can be challenging if you are a self-financed student and obliged to work to cover your monthly expenses. We offer grants (by application) to EMMaH students who are registered full-time at HAW Hamburg. Unfortunately, students from the Politécnico do Porto and the Université de Lille 2 aren’t eligible to apply for any financial support in Hamburg. Please ask your home university’s departmental coordinator for advice on this issue.
