New US partner in the Global E3 network

Since 2015 HAW Hamburg has been a member of the Global E3 network which promotes the mobility of engineering students. Stevens Institute of Technology joined the network in 2024. With the introduction of the new English-language Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering at HAW Hamburg in the summer semester of 2025, the strategic consideration is to promote closer cooperation between the universities and develop student exchanges.

Founded in 1870 and modelled on the German and French technical universities, Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey is one of the oldest technical universities in the USA and the first US university to introduce a bachelor's degree programme in mechanical engineering. An initial contact with Stevens Institute of Technology took place in May 2024 at the annual Global E3 conference. There, discussions took place between Prof Dr Jutta Abulawi (Department of Automotive Engineering & Aerospace) and Susan Rachouh, Head of the International Office at Stevens. They quickly realised that there were many similarities between the universities due to the practical orientation of the teaching and the close links to industry. 55% of students are enrolled at the Schaefer School of Engineering and Science and mechanical engineering continues to be the largest focus there.

In autumn 2024, there were two on-site visits to get to know the university and make initial contacts with teachers and students. Ingrid Weatherall, who is responsible for HAW Hamburg's ‘HAW goes USA’ strategy in the International Office, used the three days in New Jersey to introduce HAW Hamburg, get to know her colleagues in the International Office and gain an impression of the campus and the university. ‘The facilities and equipment of the Creative Space, where students can develop their own models and projects, were particularly impressive. The practical orientation of the curriculum is anchored in the so-called ‘Design Spine’, where students have to complete compulsory modules in the laboratory every semester.’

Another highlight was, of course, the view of the Manhattan skyline and One World Trade Centre from the window of the International Office.

As part of a presentation for students, the first engineering students were recruited for a semester abroad in Hamburg. The students were particularly enthusiastic about the industry- and practice-orientated teaching and the opportunity to be part of the HAWKS racing team. Discussions with the heads of the various departments of the School of Engineering & Science were used to explain the English-language modules at HAW Hamburg and to highlight the exchange opportunities. ‘The lecturers and colleagues in the International Office were all very open-minded and interested in promoting a cooperation with Hamburg. The view of the Manhattan skyline and the One World Trade Centre from the window of the International Office was of course also a highlight. HAW Hamburg can't compete with that and it also makes the university a very attractive location for our students.’

The head of the new English-language Bachelor's programme, Prof. Dr Achim Schmidt, received travel funding from the International Office (‘HAW goes USA’ budget) to visit Stevens and hold in-depth discussions with lecturers. With the Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies, Prof Dr Hamid Hadim, the focus was specifically on the content of the modules offered in Hamburg and the comparability with courses at Stevens. ‘Mr Hadim has already familiarised himself very intensively with the module handbook. We discussed issues relating to the number of semester weeks and the division between labs and lectures. In terms of content, Prof Hadim is convinced that the content is comparable to the content at the Stevens Institute, so that credit transfer should not be a problem.’ As both lecturers come from the field of thermodynamics, there was also a great deal of technical discussion. A tour of the campus provided many insights into everyday teaching and the laboratories. ‘A real highlight was attending the lectures by Prof Dr Yong Shi, who teaches the Technical Mechanics module at Stevens. I was able to accompany Prof Shi both to his student laboratory and to his lectures and got to know numerous students who were all very open and interested in Hamburg.’

The next step will be the first student exchange with the first Stevens student coming to Hamburg in the summer semester 2025. This in turn means that a tuition-free place at Stevens can be advertised for an HAW Hamburg student for the winter semester 2025/26. Further information will be published at the beginning of November under: HAW goes USA. From summer semester 2026, the new English-language Bachelor in mechanical engineering with courses in the third semester will be open to exchange students and it is hoped that the cooperation with Stevens Institute of Technology can be an important building block in the further internationalisation of the degree programme.
