On July 11, 2024, five WASCAL doctoral students from Hamburg University of Applied Sciences visited the Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS) in Hamburg as part of the NetCDA project.
The GERICS is an independent scientific organizational entity of the Helmholtz‐Zentrum Hereon initiated by the German Federal Government in 2009 as a fundamental part of the German high‐tech strategy for climate protection. The interdisciplinary team at GERICS develops scientifically based prototype products and services to support decision-makers in politics, business and public administration in adapting to climate change.
Dr. Torsten Weber, scientist at the GERICS of the Helmholtz Centre Hereon, gave a general introduction of the Climate Service centre, whereas his colleague Dr. Alain Tamoffo held a short lecture on Climate Modelling practices. In addition, Dr Weber presented the BMBF-funded project WRAP 2.0: LANDSURF, which is developing a regional Earth system model for West Africa. Especially the web-based decision support system for agriculture, food security, water management and risk management that Dr Weber virtually walked the visitors through, may hold important insights and be of high relevance to the PhD students’ research.
