We believe that sustainability begins with each of us. Our Sustainability Strategy sets out how, as HAW Hamburg, we are meeting our responsibility through a whole institution approach and, as one of Germany’s largest universities of applied sciences, contributing actively to the sustainable transformation of society.

Our Executive Board began developing the Sustainability Strategy in the winter semester of 2023/24. Following a participatory approach, the strategy was developed with guidance from the Sustainability Advisory Committee and input from all groups across our university, particularly from our open Working Group on the Sustainability Strategy. It was adopted in the summer semester of 2025.

Our slogan is “Because you can make a difference.” In that spirit, this Sustainability Strategy concerns all of us. Get involved – together, we can shape a sustainable future.

The HAW Hamburg Climate Action Plan was developed between February 2025 and April 2026 through a participatory process as part of the federally funded “Future Forum for Climate-Friendly Universities” (zkh) project.

The plan provides transparency regarding greenhouse gas emissions, existing activities and options for action, and serves as a foundation for the strategic advancement of climate action at HAW Hamburg.

As an important component of the Sustainability Strategy, the Climate Action Plan is primarily associated with the field of action “Campus Operations.”
