Student Engagement for Sustainability

Student engagement is an important part of our university and is therefore embedded in our Sustainability Strategy as a dedicated area of action. Many students contribute to sustainable development through a wide range of projects, actively bringing in their own perspectives. Since 2025, these activities have also been supported by student ESD Pioneers.

This page showcases a selection of the resulting outputs, ranging from project work and initiatives to short films.

In July 2025, students on our Bachelor’s degree programme in International Business created this guide as part of the module “Intercultural Project Work”. It is designed to help international students get started with sustainable living in Hamburg.

Students on our Public Health degree programme developed a historical walking tour of Hamburg. It introduces students to places that played an important role in the history of public health in our Hanseatic city, including the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, the Gängeviertel, the former Port Hospital (Hafenkrankenhaus), and a bookshop on Jungfernstieg.

HAW Hamburg students Baris, Emelie, Merle and Kori transformed 100 square metres of lawn in Bergedorf into a wildflower meadow with support from Campuls+. “We wanted to counteract the effects of soil sealing on campus and give nature more space to thrive,” the students explained. The idea originated in a sustainability module taught by Prof. Dr. Petra Naujoks.

In this self-produced film, the 2025 ESD Pioneers offer insights into their team spirit and the time they shared together. The film also features the three Sustainability Afternoons they organised on campus. The 2025 ESD Pioneers programme was made possible through funding provided by Hamburg’s Ministry for the Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture (BUKEA) as part of the Hamburg ESD 2030 Master Plan.
