Strategic partner - MICA
Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore is one of the top 10 US colleges offering a Master of Fine Arts programme in the USA. It is ranked 3rd in ‘graphic design’ and 4th in ‘painting/drawing’ in the U.S. News & World Report rankings. HAW Hamburg students have the opportunity to take art and design courses at a very high level. The university offers courses in animation, printing techniques, graphic design, photography, illustration, ceramics, art history, painting, product design, sculpture, textile design and drawing.
The cooperation with MICA was launched in 2009 as part of the ‘HAW goes USA’ strategy. The strategic partnership receives ISAP funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) from 2024-2026.
Student exchange
................................................................................................................................................................................................
What particularly distinguishes the Bachelor exchange programme is the very different working methods in the courses of the two universities. While the US exchange students in Hamburg learn to develop and deepen their ideas in project courses over an entire semester, the Hamburg students at MICA have to work through and creatively implement design tasks in short study periods. In doing so, they familiarise themselves with processes and working methods from the professional design industry and are thus prepared for the current professional demands placed on designers today.
With the increasing globalisation of the design industry and the associated issues and areas of responsibility, the study semester in the US offers an excellent opportunity to prepare students for professional requirements. They gain valuable insights into the professional working methods of the respective partner country and can thus expand their knowledge for a career in a global environment.
Faculty exchange
................................................................................................................................................................................................
The first faculty exchange with MICA took place between 2016 and 2018. In the field of brand design, there was a joint workshop in Hamburg with professors Sandra Maxa, Mark Sanders and HAW Hamburg professor Sven Vogel, as well as several guest lectures in Baltimore. After the pandemic, the facultyexchange was resumed and in 2023 the field of textile design was added with a Master's workshop in Hamburg. Article
In autumn 2025, workshops on various design topics will take place in both Baltimore and Hamburg.
ISAP funding
The cooperation with MICA was selected by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) as a strategic partnership and receives ISAP funding since 2024. As part of the programme, HAW Hamburg students receive a full scholarship for a semester abroad in Baltimore. In addition, professors from both universities receive partial funding for the faculty exchange.
