Your HAW account and password
More and more of HAW Hamburg's online services are using the HAW account number (e.g. aba123) for user registration. This account information is given to students with their enrolment certificate and to employees when they start work.
How do I change my password?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
You can change your password using the self-service portal. Even if your password has expired, you can still sign in here up to three more times.
If you log in to the self-service portal with an expired password, you will be redirected to a second, almost identical login window without a HAW logo. Please don't interrupt the process as your new password will be set here.
Rules for assigning passwords:
- Your password must have between 8 and 20 characters.
- Your password must contain lower- and uppercase letters as well as digits.
- It cannot contain three consecutive letters from your first name, second name, user name or email address.
If you have saved your current mobile number (students in myHAW and employees/external users in the self-service portal), you can also use an mTAN to reset your password.
To continue to use the eduroam network, you need to update your eduroam configuration after changing your password. This is due to eduroam's security policy.
I've forgotten my password. What do I do?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
-
Reset your password yourself using an mTAN
To do this, you must have saved your current mobile number in your account!
Where and how do I save my mobile number?
Student: in myHAW under 'Edit my information' > 'Phone numbers'
(Note: The newly entered mobile number can't be used for the mTAN process until the following day.)
Employees or external users: in the self-service portal under 'Manage mobile phone numbers'
- In person in the Chip Card Services Office
My password only works with the HAW mailer system. What's wrong?

Your password has expired!
Please change your password on the self-service portal.
Even if your password has expired, it is still possible to log in to the self-service portal up to three times. However, you will immediately be redirected to a page where you can change the password. The new password will then be synchronised with all the connected systems and can be used immediately.
To continue to use the eduroam network, you need to update your eduroam configuration after changing your password. This is due to eduroam's security policy.
I've forgotten my user name? What do I do?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Due to data protection concerns, the user name can only be communicated in person and upon presentation of a student/employee ID card, a personal ID card, or a passport.

How long will my HAW account and/or my HAW mailer inbox be available to me?
................................................................................................................................................................................................
- For students:
Your HAW mailer inbox remains active for one year following deregistration, then it is deactivated. Please use this period to save the data in your mailbox. Access to other applications which require the HAW account for authentification – such as myHAW, VPN and WLAN – remains activated for 70 days following deregistration. This 70-day period begins upon receipt of the deregistration certificate.
- For professors/employees:
Your HAW account and your HAW mailer inbox are only available to you for as long as you are a member of HAW Hamburg.
Professors can apply to the Personnel Service while they are still employed for emeritus status; they then have access to their mailbox and the various online services even when they are no longer working.
- For instructors:
Your HAW account and your HAW mailer inbox are active for the duration of your teaching contract and an additional 60 days. The account is then deactivated.
Resetting your HAW account with an mTAN
You're a student and you've saved your mobile number on myHAW?
Or you're an employee or external user and you've saved your mobile number on the self-service portal?
Then it's possible for you to reset your password with the help of a mobile TAN.
Important points about the mobile TAN (mTAN):
- You can request an mTAN four times per day (at intervals of at least 15 minutes).
- Every mTAN is valid for 15 minutes.
- mTANs will only be sent to valid German mobile numbers.
- Calls and text messages to the mTAN sender will be ignored.
