Climate education and climate action in health care - a peer-to-peer module

Bildungsmodul PeeK4Health

Background

Climate change is one of the greatest threats to human health in the 21st century. The consequences of progressing climatic changes are increasingly felt in Germany: heat waves, extreme weather, changes to local ecosystems, rising ozone concentrations and the emergence of new types of infectious diseases are just a few examples.

All of this affects our physical and mental health. At the same time, climate change and its health impacts are increasingly gaining a hearing in public discourse, and voiced by stakeholders. At the forefront of this are the efforts of the younger generation to strengthen climate adaptation and climate protection in the health sector, which are reflected, for example, in the Health for Future movement of the German Climate Change and Health Alliance (KLUG). The Hamburg University of Applied Sciences supports this movement through its novel PeeK4Health project initiative.

Project focus

The aim of the extracurricular education module “PeeK4Health” is to strengthen the transfer of knowledge and strategies on climate adaptation and mitigation in everyday healthcare practice and research through the peer-to-peer approach. In the long term, the project will promote the climate literacy of the next generation of health actors and familiarize them with a topic that will be of great importance for their future careers.

Education and training of future health actors through an interprofessional peer learning program with a focus on climate education and climate adaptation

The Peek4Health project (12/2022-11/2023) is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) based on a resolution of the German Bundestag.
