COVID-19: Services currently being offered by the HAW Hamburg libraries
Due to the current coronavirus situation, the HAW Hamburg libraries are offering only very limited opening hours and access is restricted to a specific group of users! Only those people permitted to enter HAW Hamburg buildings are authorised to enter the libraries. You can find more information on the HAW Hamburg coronavirus updates page.
The HAW Hamburg libraries are currently (last update: 14 January 2021) only open for the order and pick-up service and for returns, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Only HAW Hamburg instructors, employees and students can use these services. All additional services that are currently available are described in more detail below. Limited self-service borrowing and the use of library workspaces for studying are unfortunately not possible at the current time.
You can find updates and information about our services and library access in the list below. If you come to the library to pick up items you have ordered, please remember to return any outstanding materials.
Overview of services currently available (Updated: 16 February 2021)
E-media resources available through the HAW libraries
................................................................................................................................................................................................
HAW Hamburg members – employees, students and instructors – can access numerous online resources from the HAW network. This access is available even when you are not physically at the university:
1. VPN connection
Almost all of the e-media licensed for use at HAW Hamburg can also be accessed remotely using the VPN connection.
You can find more information about using the VPN connection here. If you have difficulties using the VPN connection or have questions about it, please contact ITSC_support (@) haw-hamburg.de. For questions related to our e-media resources, please use the call-a-librarian service (see above) or contact your library using this form.
Once you have connected to the HAW network using the VPN connection, you can search the HAW catalogue as you normally would and read full-text versions of online resources.
2. Shibboleth access
Shibboleth provides another way of accessing electronic resources. You can use your HAW account to log in, either via the Shibboleth portal at https://login.haw-hamburg.de or directly through the publisher listed in the HAW catalogue. A VPN connection is not necessary.
This service is currently under development.
Order and pick-up service for print media
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Due to the current coronavirus situation, HAW Hamburg's Information and Library Service will again be offering its order and pick-up service for print media as of 11 January 2021. This service is available to HAW Hamburg instructors, employees and students only.
To use the service, please do the following:
1. Search as usual for the titles you want to borrow in our HAW Catalogue. You can order a maximum of 10 titles.
2. Copy the link(s) of the title(s) you have located.
3. Use our contact form and let us know what you want to borrow by entering the link(s) you have copied.
4. Enter your first name, last name and your library account number (located on the back of your chip card) in the form.
5. We will send you an email when your materials are ready and will let you know when they can be picked up. You can then collect the items, which will already have been booked to your library account, at the respective library on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10:00 am–4:00 pm. Materials from the Business, Engineering and Computer Science Library 1 (TWI 1, at Berliner Tor 5) can continue to be picked up at the Business, Engineering and Computer Science Library 2 (Berliner Tor 7).
6. First-semester students: If your HAW Hamburg chip card has still not been activated as a library card, please fill out and send the online registration form. You will then need to bring your chip card, either your personal ID card or your passport, and your residence certificate (Meldebestätigung) to the respective library. Alternatively, you can send us the necessary copies (both sides) using the contact form. You can find more information in the Coronavirus FAQs under 'I don't have a library card yet and want to borrow library items. What do I need to do?'
7. When you collect your order, please use the opportunity to return any items that you've had for a while!
When you pick up your items, please observe the requirement to wear a face mask and to maintain a physical distance of 1.5 metres from others.
Interim Life Sciences library at Bergedorf Campus
................................................................................................................................................................................................
You can continue to borrow and return materials at the interim location. A small part of the collection is even accessible on site. However, most of the items from the Life Sciences library are only available via order through the HAW catalogue. The books ordered can be picked up the following day at the interim location (or on Tuesday if you order between Friday and Monday noon). We will hold the materials you order ready for you for three days.
Unforunately, we cannot offer library workplaces for study during the renovation period.
The renovations are expected to be complete at the beginning of 2022.

Tips for using Open Access resources
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Many reputable resources are permanently available online, at no charge (Open Access).
We have compiled a list of Open Access resources which make it possible for you to access academic literature without registration, a VPN connection, etc.: Tips for finding Open Access resources (in German only).
The aim of Open Access is to make academic information available online on an ongoing and no-charge basis, i.e. without financial, legal or technical barriers. We have provided this list to support you in searching for, finding and using authentic Open Access offers – alongside those offered temporarily because of the Covid-19 outbreak.
Virtual walk-in service at the Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg
................................................................................................................................................................................................
The Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg - Carl von Ossietzky is offering HAW Hamburg members an e-media delivery service (Virtual walk-in service), provided they have a valid library card or email account from a state university or the City of Hamburg.
Following a successful search in Katalogplus, you can order e-books or e-articles using the following form:
Electronic delivery of print materials is not possible.
You do not need to use the form if you have a library card from the Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg.
Limited self-service borrowing (not currently available)
................................................................................................................................................................................................
As of 25 May 2020 the HAW Hamburg libraries are offering limited self-service borrowing of print media. This service is currently only available to HAW Hamburg instructors, employees and students.
The total number of users who can be in the library at one time is limited to 10 people per library. The maximum amount of time that can be spent in the library is 15 minutes.
The libraries (except for the Business, Engineering and Computer Science Library 1 – TW 1) are open Monday to Thursday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm / Fridays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. The TWI 1 Library (Berliner Tor 5) is unfortunately still closed. If you need materials from TWI 1, please continue to use the pick-up service for print media, which is also outlined on this page.
This is how self-borrowing works:
- Please use the HAW Catalogue in advance to determine which items you need in order to avoid having to do a search at the library.
- To enter the library, please take one of the bags located at the entry and take it inside with you. If no bag is available, please wait until someone leaves the library and returns their bag.
- Please observe the requirement to wear a face mask, the physical distancing rules, and the usual hygiene-related measures. You can find more information about this on HAW Hamburg's general coronavirus information page.
- In the library, you can locate the materials you need and check them out yourself at the self-service checkout stations.
- In some cases it is possible to borrow reference materials upon request. Please ask us about this at the loans desk.
- Please do not take any books from the returns shelf. You can, however, return books here (via the returns shelf or returns bins).
- The book scanners, rooms for group work and all closed off areas of the library are unfortunately not available for use.
- Please remember to return the bag when you leave the library.
Library workspaces for studying (not currently available)
................................................................................................................................................................................................
As of 1 July 2020, library workspaces will be available to HAW Hamburg students for studying. This service is offered exclusively for HAW Hamburg instructors, employees and students!
A limited number of individual workspaces (group study is not possible) are available in the various HAW Hamburg libraries and can be booked from Monday to Thursday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm / Fridays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm :
- TWI 2 (Berliner Tor 7) – 30 workspaces
- S&P (Alexanderstr. 1) – 13 workspaces
- DMI (Finkenau 35) – 13 workspaces
Unfortunately, the extensive building work currently underway in the Life Sciences Library means that no study places are available there at this time.
A reservation gives you a workspace for three hours (Fridays for four hours). A maximum of one reservation can be made per person each day. Reservations can be made via a brief written request to the specific library using the library's contact form. Please include your library card number (on the back of your HAW chip card), as well as the time and date you would like to reserve the space for.
HAW Hamburg's current hygiene rules must be adhered to in the libraries: Please wear a mask during your time in the library, including when you are at your workspace, and maintain a distance of 1.5 metres from others. Upon arrival you are required to fill out a form with your personal information so that we can contact you in the event that another user reports a Covid-19 infection.
