Final Theses and Certificates
General Information
................................................................................................................................................................................................
You may apply for your final thesis no earlier than when you have fulfilled all the requirements of the currently valid examination and study regulations.
After you and your first and second advisors have signed the application, please submit it along with the accompanying sheet to the Chair of the Examination Board (PAV). If the external examiner has not previously served as an examiner for HAW Hamburg, please also submit a simple copy of the external examiner’s academic degree to the PAV. Applications with external examiners that do not include proof of an academic degree cannot be accepted. The PAV will enter a binding start date and submission date. If you have a preferred date, please let the PAV know. The start date may be backdated by a maximum of 4 weeks in consultation with the PAV.
The processing time for a master’s thesis is 6 months. If you have additional exams to take during the semester in which the processing period falls, the processing time may be extended depending on your exam load.
After your application has been processed, you will receive a copy of the registration form with your submission dates.
Restriction Notice / Confidentiality
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Our application for the submission of a thesis includes a clause that prohibits any publication of the contents of your thesis or disclosure to third parties, if requested. For this purpose, the application form includes a checkbox that can be marked by both you and the reviewers (and thus also by the company) if publication or disclosure is to be prohibited. It is sufficient for just one of the parties involved to check this box—this triggers an automatic process on our end that protects the content.
Since we, as a university, also have a strong interest in collaborating with external companies, we are extremely sensitive when it comes to handling data and results collected externally.

Title Change and Extension of the Submission Deadline
................................................................................................................................................................................................
Extension of the Submission Deadline
If you become ill while working on your thesis, you must immediately submit the original copy of a medical certificate of incapacity to work (Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung (AU)) to the Chair of the Examination Board (PAV) (deadline: one business day after the expiration of the medical certificate). The submission period will be extended by the number of days you were ill.
For other reasons, first obtain the approval of your advisors and submit it to the PAV (via email is also acceptable) along with a brief explanation and a statement of the desired extension for approval. The PAV will then notify the Examination Office, from which you will receive confirmation of the new submission deadline via email.
Changing the Title
If you wish to change the title of a thesis that has already been registered, obtain approval from your thesis advisors and submit it to the Chair of the Examination Board (PAV) for approval. The PAV will then notify the Examination Office, from which you will receive confirmation of the approved change via email.
Please remember to reprint the application for submission of the thesis with the updated title so that all forms display the correct title. You do not need to obtain the examiners’ signatures again.
Submission of the Thesis
................................................................................................................................................................................................
The submission deadline is binding. Early submission is permitted up to 3 weeks before the specified deadline for master’s programs.
Theses received outside the deadline will not be accepted.
Theses not submitted by the deadline will be graded as “failed” with a grade of 5.0.
If the submission deadline falls on a Sunday or a public holiday, the next business day is considered the submission deadline.
You have three options for submitting your completed thesis (2 bound copies + 1 data storage device containing a digital version of your thesis (CD, SD card, USB drive) + examination file (consisting of 5 documents: examination file form, signed statutory declaration, evaluation forms 1 and 2, and submission confirmation)):
- In person at the Examination Office on the Bergedorf Campus (outside of office hours, only by prior appointment)
By post (the date of the postmark counts as the submission date). Please keep the postal receipt in a safe place. We recommend sending it by certified mail:

If you do not submit your thesis in person, you will automatically receive your submission confirmation by post. You do not need to notify us separately about your submission. If any documents are missing, we will notify you by email. The missing items can be submitted later without affecting your deadline.
After you submit your thesis, the reviewers have six weeks to evaluate it. The reviews are sent to the Examination Office. Once both reviews are available, the Examination Office forwards them to the Chair of the Examination Board. The grade will then be posted on myHAW.
Information on Re-enrollment:
You do not need to re-enroll if you have completed all required coursework and submit your thesis before the end of the current semester.
Applying for the Certificate
................................................................................................................................................................................................
You can submit your certification request even if your thesis grade has not yet been assigned. All other coursework must be graded and recorded in myHAW.
Certification documents will be issued using the first and last names on file in myHAW. If you have additional first or last names that are not listed there, please submit a copy of a valid ID document showing your current names along with your application.
As soon as the certificate documents are signed and ready, we will notify you by email. You will then be given the option to pick up the documents in person at the Examination Office or have them sent to you by certified mail.
Re-enrollment for the following semester is not necessary or permitted, even if grades for individual courses are still pending. You can find more detailed information on de-registration under the separate tab “De-registration.”
Please use this Application for all master’s degree programs .
Withdrawal
Here's what's next for you...
................................................................................................................................................................................................
You can withdraw from the current semester as of today, as of a specific date in the future (not retroactively), or at the end of the respective semester. You can submit the application online through your myHAW-Account. The withdrawal notice and the pension certificate will be mailed to you. Processing by our central admissions office (Studierendensekretariat) can take up to four weeks; please keep this in mind when submitting your application.
If you successfully complete your degree program and do not explicitly request de-registration, you will be de-registered at the end of the semester in which you complete your degree (i.e., on March 31 or September 30).
Once you have completed all coursework, you do not need to re-enroll for the following semester, even if grades for individual courses are still pending. You will initially receive a certificate of de-registration due to failure to re-register by the deadline, which states that you have not taken your final exam. Please do not let this concern you! As soon as the grades have been entered and the degree documents have been issued, you will receive an updated certificate from the Studierendensekretariat confirming your degree. Grades can be entered and degree documents requested even after you have been de-registered.
Deactivation of your myHAW account and access to the HAW mail system:
Your myHAW account and access to the HAW Mailer will be deactivated one year after you withdraw from the university. You will then no longer be able to print out grade reports or other certificates.
Withdrawal and Semester Ticket:
The semester ticket remains valid for the semester in which you re-enrolled, even if you were to withdraw before then.
If you would like a refund, you can find the relevant information on ourChipkartenbüro.
