Symposium on University Arts and Nature

Do., 01.07.2027 – Fr., 02.07.2027
Porto, Portugal

The most effective sustainability solutions are not purely technical — they are deeply cultural and ethical. Universities are beginning to recognise that the arts have a distinctive and irreplaceable role to play in shaping ecological awareness, values and action. Artistic practice and pedagogy engage the senses, the emotions and the imagination in ways that data and policy alone cannot; they help communities to feel, interpret and inhabit environmental change rather than merely measure it.
The scale of the sustainability challenge is well documented: climate disruption, biodiversity loss and resource depletion demand transformations in how societies produce, consume and relate to the natural world. Yet the cultural and ethical dimensions of these transformations remain under-addressed in higher education curricula, research agendas and institutional strategy:

  • Arts-based approaches — from eco-art, land art and socially engaged practice to music, theatre, film, creative writing and design — are increasingly recognised as powerful methods for public engagement, community mobilisation and interdisciplinary research on environmental issues.
  • Universities hold unique convening power: they train future professionals, shape public discourse, steward cultural institutions (museums, galleries, theatres, archives) and manage significant estates and green spaces. This makes them pivotal sites for integrating arts and nature into sustainability practice.
  • National and regional policy frameworks — including the EU Green Deal, UNESCO's Culture and Sustainable Development agendas, and emerging national arts-and-climate strategies — are creating incentives for cultural institutions and higher education to collaborate on ecological action.

In ecological awareness and behaviour change, artistic engagement can shift attitudes, build emotional connection to place and motivate pro-environmental action more effectively than information campaigns alone. In interdisciplinary research and innovation, artists and humanities scholars collaborate with ecologists, engineers and social scientists to frame problems, generate questions and communicate findings in accessible, affecting ways. In community resilience and place-making, university arts programmes can partner with local communities to document environmental change, co-create public art and reimagine shared spaces in response to climate impacts. In institutional transformation, embedding arts and nature across campuses — through curricula, estates, procurement and public programming — models the holistic sustainability that universities preach.

Investing in university arts and nature generates cultural, educational and civic value. It attracts students and staff seeking meaning-driven education, strengthens universities' civic mission and community relationships, and creates platforms for public dialogue on difficult environmental questions. Arts-and-nature programming can support mental health and wellbeing, foster belonging and connection to place, and build the creative capacities needed for a just transition.

It Is against this background and the perceived need to capitalise on the potential of arts in promoting sustainable development, that the Symposium is being organised.
