International Symposium on Sustainability-Driven Innovation

Mo, 15.01.2024, 09:00 – Di, 16.01.2024, 18:00 Uhr
Punta Arenas, Chile

The role of green, clean and socially oriented technologies, research, development and entrepreneurship

Research and development play a major role in society’s economic and human progress. In the current scenario, given the unsustainability of modern times, creativity, innovation, and thinking outside the box are greatly needed to address the environmental, social and economic challenges facing us.

The approaches undertaken, the resources available, and the level of advancement in sustainability-driven innovation developed by higher education institutions, companies, NGOs, and other relevant actors are, of course, highly context-specific and dependent on the different countries and regions. Also, the responses have so far proved to be insufficient to provide the holistic solutions required to tackle current complex challenges related to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals such as water, energy, sustainable cities, biodiversity, transport, human well-being and development, circular economy, etc.

It is on the basis of the need to accelerate change, and to foster a dialogue among an international community of academics and professionals in the R&D and sustainability fields, that the 'International Symposium on Sustainability-Driven Innovation - The Role of Green, Clean and Socially Oriented Technologies, Research, Development and Entrepreneurship' is being organised by the University of Magallanes and the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Programme (IUSDRP)

The symposium will serve the purpose of sharing best practices with an international audience and further promoting green, clean and socially oriented technologies, research and entrepreneurship. It is part of the 'Accelerating the Implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals' series, with events aimed at fostering the implementation of the UN SDGs.

The 'International Symposium on Sustainability-Driven Innovation - The Role of Green, Clean, and Socially Oriented Technologies, Research, Development and Entrepreneurship' will be held in Punta Arenas, Chile, on 15–16 January 2024. It is hosted by the University of Magallanes and is aimed at practitioners and academic staff worldwide, from both the natural and social sciences, who are working in the field of sustainable R&D.

As output and long-term documentation of the event, selected papers will be published in the book 'Sustainability-Driven Innovation', which will follow the successful 'Encyclopedia of Sustainability in Higher Education', a 'living edition', and the 'Encyclopedia of the UN Sustainable Development Goals', the largest editorial project on sustainable development ever undertaken.
